The one-button brake is what makes that work: a thumb press stops the cord where it is, and the lock holds it there until you release it, so you can bring a dog in close at a kerb or when another dog approaches and then let it back out again.

The light is the part that earns its place in winter. A reflective strip only works when a car's headlights are already pointed at it. A lit handle puts out its own light, which means you can see where your dog is putting its feet on an unlit footpath, and oncoming traffic can see you before it is aimed at you.

Which length should I choose? 3m suits pavements and busy streets where you want the dog closer; 5m suits parks and open paths. The mechanism is the same in both.

Honest limits: the handle light runs on a battery, so it is a walking aid rather than a torch, and a retractable lead is not the right tool for a dog still learning not to pull. For a strong puller, a no-pull harness with a fixed lead gives you far more control.

Ships free to the US, UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
